Here is the nearly finished pastel of a friend's two dogs, and Marian working on it in the early stages, above.
Paint and Pastel Workshop is back. Here is what we are working on... Marian is working on this waterscape from a photo she took in Block Island. It is very close to being finished. Just needs the water lilies. See photo below.
Working from a Photo:
Look how far the Flower Garden painting has come, with all the colorful blooms added. Marian put this one aside and came back to it once she finished the boat. Sometimes we need to step aside and give the painting some room.
Boat in the bay , photo by Marian.
Here is the photo Marian is working from. She tried to minimize the amount of shoreline mud showing, while still getting the feel of the beach. She did this by cropping along the bottom of the photo, and adding more height to the sky. The other issue was the very dark shadow under the boat. We decided the bottom of the boat must be painted black, since it really blends into the dark shadow underneath. Marian made her shadow lighter so it would not dominate the painting.
Suzanne is working on this Vermont pastoral scene.
Suzanne has started a landscape from a photo taken in Vermont, neighbors who own a sheep farm have this view from their porch.
This waterscape was started on location, and is added to during our painting session when I have the right colors handy. It is an odd view of angular rocks above some gushing waterfalls.
Still life with Fruit: we used our observational skills and sketching ability to create this first step in a realistic still life. Shown are two different views of the same scene.
Pastels: trees and skies are what we are working on.

Pastel Workshop
Beverly is working on the layout of a scene using a blue pastel underpainting. Nice graceful branches.
Marion started with a purple underpainting and is adding in color and shading.
Beverly's tree sketch, to get the basic shapes of the branches using a photo for reference.
Demonstration of a the beginning of a scene with a sunset cloud sky (to be added) and trees that are underpainted with purple.
